Abstract

The orthotropic elastic properties in the radial-tangential plane of Norway spruce were determined by use of an optical deformation measurement technique and inverse finite element modelling. White light digital speckle photography in combination with optical microscopy was used for measuring the local deformations in a single growth ring of the material. As a result of the high spatial resolution in the measurement, it was possible to determine the radial variation of the in-plane coefficients of elasticity across the growth ring; the early springwood and the late summerwood were found to have very different stiffness properties.
