Abstract

The synthesis and nonlinear optical characterization of two novel series of heteroaromatic-based quadrupolar chromophores are described. The new systems present a A-π-D-π-A and a D-π-A-π-D general framework, respectively, where A is a π-deficient heteroaromatic ring (pyridine, quinoline, benzothiazole) and D a π-excessive 5-membered heterocycle (pyrrole, furan, 3, 4-ethylenedioxythiophene). Systems exhibit large two-photon absorption (TPA) activities in the femtoseconds regime (TPA cross section as high as 150 GM with 150-fs laser pulses). Their TPA-based optical limiting activity is also shown.
