The Celebrity Performer and the Creative Facilitator: The Artist, The School and The Art Museum

This chapter explores the development of the role of the artist as teacher and workshop facilitator in the context of the art museum. Drawn from research projects over ten years, it suggests that the character of such work needs to develop within a climate of understanding of the different cultures of museum and school, respecting the integrity and distinctiveness of each contribution. Artists’ workshop methodology has derived mainly from current artistic movements and practices, balancing between the roles of artisan-craft-worker, celebrity performer, issue-based activist, and conceptual thinker. As creative facilitator, the artist can develop a role which is both valuable for professional development and of enduring value in museum education. If it is developed in partnership alongside school teacher and museum educator, it can also be strategically powerful in developing towards an education which is sensitive to individual strengths, interests and ambitions.
