Abstract
The optical spectra of f-f transitions of trivalent rare earth (R3+) ions in solids are very useful for different purposes. First of all, to analyse the purity and the local environment about the rare earth site in various compounds. Then, to follow the evolution of the barycenter positions of 2S+1Lj levels inside the 4fN configurations. This evolution is linear and is separated in two parts, i) The shift of excited manifolds following ionic — covalent character of R3+ ion and ii) The shift of the ground multiplet states which describes the crystal field strength of the R3+ ion. As well, we shall demonstrate that the absorption / emission lines of R3+ ion embedded in an isostructural family display a linear relation with the ionic radii of the cation host in the lattice along the lanthanide series. It is then possible to predict the phase limit existence following the evolution of Stark components of some isolated crystal field levels. It is clearly shown on the rare earth garnet family.
