These considerations were first presented on a workshop on Keith Lehrer’s epistemology and related topics, held at the University of Constance on June 16th, 2000. I am grateful to Keith Lehrer for a discussion of these topics, to Wolfgang Spohn for several valuable remarks, and to Christopher von Bülow for improving my English.
