Abstract

In the third edition of his ‘Plant Sociology’, page 91, Braun-Blanquet (1964) writes (translated from the German): ‘In addition to the Linnean species, we can consider as character-species races whose morphology is difficult to distinguish, subspecies, and even varieties, all of which occur optimally in particular phytosociological units. Wide-spread species of expanding families often include parallel races fixed by heredity, i.e. genotypes which are attached to a particular area and often also to a clearly defined phytosociological unit (alliance, association). These parallel ecological races, usually subspecies, which are restricted to different climates, differ not only morphologically, but also physiologically and ecologically…’.

Dedicated to Professor V. Westhoff on the occasion of his 60th birthday.

The author greatly appreciates valuable suggestions of Dr K. Urbanska-Worytkiewicz and her help in the translation of the manuscript.
