Part of the book series: Documenta Ophthalmologica Proceedings Series ((DOPS,volume 15))

Abstract

The ocular effects of chronic use of birth control pills (BCP) has been debated in the literature for the last decade. Numerous case reports of vascular occlusive phenomena, optic neuritis, Pseudotumor cerebri, and migraine (Nicholson, 1969; Salmon, 1968; Collaborative Group, 1973; Walsh, 1965) are historically implicated with the use of oral contraceptives. Recently, Bos & Deutman (1975) reported four cases of maculopathy associated with long-term BCP use. Other reports, both in human and animal investigations (Drill, 1975a,b; Davidorf, 1972; Faust, 1966) suggest that there is no difference in ocular changes between control and female subjects receiving oral contraceptives.
