Abstract
The use of isolated retinal preparations in a bathing solution is one of the conventional methods for electroretinographic investigation of the retina. The conditions of the experimental procedure deviate to a considerable extent from the physiological conditions of in vivo studies. We have reported a series of studies of the retinal function and metabolism using a perfusion technique of isolated bovine eyes, the “Living Extracorporeal Bovine Eye” (Imaizumi, 1974; Imaizumi et al., 1972, 1973, 1974; Mera, 1972; Otsuko, 1973; Takahashi, 1974, Tazawa & Seaman, 1972), which is able to maintain the eyes at a nearly physiological state, developed by one of the present authors (Tazawa) in collaboration with Seaman (Tazawa) Seaman, 1972).
