Abstract

During the past two years we have seen 22 patients with visual complaints, probably caused by alcohol abuse, at the electrophysiological department of the Rotterdam Eye Hospital. All 22 patients were accustomed to a daily intake of at least one pint of whisky, cognac or genever. It might be better to speak of tobacco-alcohol abuse, since 16 patients were also heavy smokers, 3 patients were moderate smokers, while the smoking habits of the others were not known. Interestingly in this respect is that during the last 10 years a patient with a misuse of tobacco only was never referred to us.
