Abstract

The primary role of an editor, specifically as the proprietor of a scientific journal, is not to be creative but to be self-effacing. An editor roust function as an intermediary between author and audience. The editor must provide a network of review, scientific and editorial, for the author; clarification of the message for the audience; and massage for both by sensitive handling of the peer review process and by maintaining a sense of common purpose and balance through the various crucial aspects of publication.
