Abstract

No definitely parabolic or hyperbolic binary orbits are known. Provisional parabolic elements are occasionally used to represent the periastron section of a high-eccentricity orbit of long and indeterminate period. As in long-period cometary orbits, the vertex sections of parabolae and of eccentric ellipses are hard to distinguish. The parabola has one orbital element less, and permits a mass computation just as the elliptical case does.
