Abstract
The vertical sequences of volcanic and sedimentary strata from Cenozoic continental rift zones can be divided into two distinct stages, this is true both of zones with strong magmatic activity (Kenya, Ethiopia) and zones with moderate or weak volcanicity (Baikal, Rhine, Western Rift of East Africa). This is due to the fact that a sharp alteration of tectonic movements occurs in the course of rifting. The second stage of the development is always characterized by faulting and taphrogenesis.
