Abstract
Theories of distributive justice, as I conceive them, are primarily attempts to answer the normative question: what division of burdens and benefits attaching to a cooperative endeavor is fair? I wish to consider a theory that proportions distributive shares to marginal product, making due allowance for the ‘costs’ to the contributor. By marginal product, I shall mean the value of what the contributor adds to what is being produced without him. The present formulation is certainly vague in the absence of any indication what allowances are ‘due’ the contributor for the costs he incurs. I will only advance to a more adequate statement of the theory by stages. It will be well to begin by clearing the ground of those misconceptions that are most likely to arise at the outset.
