Abstract
This paper is part of a larger project concerned with the formal semantics, considered along model-theoretic and truth-conditional lines, of adverbial and prepositional modification. It very soon became apparent to me that the role of space and time in adverbial modification was far greater than I, in company with most logicians, had ever assumed. It also became clear that a great many general puzzles about modification could be looked at using spatio-temporal modifiers as illustrations. In the end it turned out that the whole paper is centred on a single adverb, viz quickly, and I am very conscious of having barely begun to touch the surface of even this restricted area, but it has seemed to me for some time now that logicians can no longer be content with merely proposing general frameworks and discussing the so-called ‘logical words’ of a natural language but must actually dirty their hands and try to support the framework by showing, in as much detail as they can, how particular words behave within it. It is in this endeavour that I hope to have made a start.
