Abstract
A review of the literature on the development of fat cells is presented with particular reference to cattle where possible, A study on fat cell development in Friesian bulls designed to investigate the relationship between age and nutrition is also reported. The overall conclusion is that fat growth up to usual slaughter weight in cattle is accompanied by increases in the number of cells containing fat and in their size. It is clear that only by studying animals much older than those used for beef will it be possible to determine the potential fat cell number and relate this to the distribution of fat within the animal.
