Abstract

Both Pasteurella multocida and Pasteurella haemolytica are the cause of pneumonia in cattle and both can be isolated from the upper respiratory tracts of clinically normal animals and from tracheal air in the case of P. haemolytica. The lungs must therefore be exposed to infection. It is postulated that the factors which interfere with clearance of those organisms from the lungs might be predisposing causes of pasteurella pneumonia. The epidemiology of some of the pneumonias in calves and of the shipping fever complex is reviewed with the aim of elucidating the role of pasteurelice in bovine pneumonias.
