Abstract

Paired sera of cattle from 500 herds, in which severe respiratory troubles had been observed, were examined.

As a result of this survey, four types of respiratory disease were distinguished:
  1. 1.

The autumn respiratory disorders in which the RSB (Bovine Respiratory Syncytial virus) was present in more than half of the cases.

  2. 2.

The springtime and summertime respiratory diseases in which no virus, except possibly IBR virus (Infectious Bovine Rhinotracheitis), seemed to play an important role.

  3. 3.

The respiratory diseases due to transport (Shipping fever). In this complex, IBR is the principal agent and other viruses seemed to have no significant role.

  4. 4.

The respiratory disorders of young beef cattle at 5 to 6 weeks of age. These troubles seemed to have a non-viral cause.

The two important cases (IBR and RSB) are succinctly described.
