Abstract

An analysis of records of treatment for respiratory disease in a veal unit containing 12 ‘sheds’ of 28 market-bought calves in the south west of England revealed a peak of incidence at 5 weeks after arrival, by 10 weeks it had disappeared. 980 calves entered the unit in the year of the study and only 30 died or were removed as unsuitable.

Three indices of disease were examined, first treatment, new courses of treatment and total number of treatments. Over the study period both secular (increasing) and transient effects were observed. These indicated that extrinsic factors (eg weather or the introduction of a particular pathogen) were also important. Weather parameters from a local meteorological station were examined for possible predisposing patterns. In addition the effect of pen position on disease spread within each of the 12 sheds was examined.
