Abstract
Hemodialysis is an exchange that takes place between a patient’s blood and an electrolyte solution similar to normal blood, across semipermeable membrane. This exchange removes wastes from the patient’s blood an brings electrolyte balance to near normal. When hemodialysis is repeated regularly several times a week (whence the term “ regular dialysis treatment ” or “ maintenance hemodialysis ”) it theoretically can provide unlimited survival to patients whose own kidneys no longer function.
