Abstract

The implantation of a pacemaker involves the introduction of a foreign body made of metal, synthetic rubber and artificial resin into the human body. Bacterial contamination may have serious and potentially fatal consequences so that it is essential that the operation is undertaken under strict aseptic conditions (Plate XVI, p 51) and as quickly as possible.
