Abstract
This contribution is based on the treatment by X-rays of 1432 patients diagnosed as suffering from ankylosing spondylitis during the years 1939 to 1955 at the Middlesex Hospital London.
From among them a randomly selected series of 277 patients was chosen and details are presented of the age and sex distribution and the clinical stage of the disease. The variations in presenting features and the diagnostic criteria are discussed in relation to the details of the techniques of X-ray therapy and ancillary treatment employed.
The results of the treatment of this series of patients is presented and some consideration is given to the complications and sequelae of the X-ray therapy here described. There is particular reference to the risk of leukaemogenesis, the decline in the use of X-ray therapy and the present position in Britain of the management of ankylosing spondylitis.
