Abstract

Lake Chilwa and its plains were at one of the crossroads of Central Africa until the end of the nineteenth century. Its history has been influenced by events which went beyond the rise and fall of its water levels. Its human settlement was made up of a number of migrations each bringing with it features which were either constructive or destructive or which carried elements of both. Besides the impact of migrations, the policies and preferences of the colonial administration and its successor, the Republic of Malawi, have also left their imprint on the area and its peoples.
