Abstract

The theory of nuclear relaxation in the presence of paramagnetic ions bound to macromolecules is considered in terms of a simplified Solomon-Bloembergen-Morgan (SBM) approach. Some of the difficulties encountered and how these can best be minimised are discussed. The application of paramagnetic ions as relaxation probes in a number of currently controversial biological problems is considered. These problems include the mechanism of triggering of the complement cascade in the immune response, the hydration number of the catalytic metal ion in carbonic anhydrase and the identification of the catalytic metal ion and nature of substrate binding in liver alcohol dehydrogenase.
