Abstract

A Bäcklund map is a transformation of the dependent variables in a system of differential equations, whereby the first derivatives of the new variables are given in terms of the new variables themselves as well as of the old variables and their derivatives. In this section, only the first derivatives of the old variables enter in. The general case, where higher derivatives are admitted, is discussed in the next section.
