Abstract

Light is scattered from homogeneous materials due to microscopic local variations in the dielectric constant, and hence index of refraction within the bulk of the material. If these variations are the result of time dependent fluctuations, the scattering will generally be inelastic due to energy transfer between the incident photons and the medium. Inelastic scattering gives rise to scattered light which has a frequency spectrum different from that of the incident light and the object of many scattering experiments is to determine the form of this frequency spectrum.
