Abstract
Chemical relaxations which occur with either a change in energy or volume and have a rate constants in the range 10-6 to 10-9 secs can in principle be studied using ultrasonic techniques (1). Ultrasonic relaxation is concerned with observation of the dispersion in either the velocity (v), the absorption coefficient (α/f2) or the loss (αλ). An ideal relaxation is approximately 1.2 decades in width necessitating observation of the dispersion curves over as wide a frequency range as possible. The frequency range 1–1000 MHz can be adequately studied using a combination of three techniques.
