Part of the Mathematics and Its Applications book series (MAIA, volume 2)

Programming is viewed in this book as a mathematical subject, which is concerned with how to reduce a set, which is well-defined mathematically, to an explicit list of its elements. A program is a finite set of instructions, which, when carried out in a suitable order, will produce such a list. A formal definition of a program and a general approach to finding programs are the subject of this chapter.
