Abstract
The reactions of benzylic hydrogens has been mentioned in Chapter VI. Norman and coworkers found that oxidation of methylbenzenes gave not only diphenyl derivatives but also diarylmethanes [1061] and, in their work on nuclear acetoxylation, Eberson and coworkers usually found benzylic acetates as side products when methylbenzenes were oxidized [1046–1048]. Davidson and Triggs observed some benzyl acetate in their oxidation of toluene to bitolyls with Pd(OAc)2 at 100 °C in the presence of sodium acetate [1042] and, as might be expected, hexamethylbenzene gave exclusively pentamethylbenzyl acetate. On the other hand, van Helden and Verberg observed only bitolyls when PdCl2 + NaOAc was used to oxidize toluene at 100 °C [1052].
