Abstract
The detection of optical images is considered with emphasis given to the applications and technology oriented classifications and to the description of the available, basic state-of-the-art detectors. — The image detectors considered are examined with reference to their main astronomical applications.
The trends of development for future image detectors of higher performance than those available now are considered and the most promising image detectors identified.
