Abstract
Several investigators have demonstrated a positive correlation between enhanced solar activity and the development of strong anticyclones in high latitudes (± 70°). Enhanced cyclonic vorticity is shown in latitudes 40° to 60°. These effects are demonstrated for both hemispheres during local winter.
This paper briefly summarizes the changes in surface weather conditions which occur along with this enhancement of pressure systems. A latitudinally differentiated CO2/latent heat transfer/cloud/sea surface temperatures feedback system is described; and a potential synergism between these as yet poorly understood phenomena is linked with the strongly anomalous winter conditions of 1976–77 and 1977–78.
