Abstract
On first hearing I found the idea of a conference on philosophy and medicine an intriguing one. Metaphors popped readily to mind. Philosophers and physicians: will it be like sports spectaculars where boxers meet Sumo wrestlers with nothing in common but the ring in which they each do their own thing? Or will it be like the even more bizarre TV specials where weight lifters join with marathon runners in a common game of ping pong at which both are incompetent. I refused to entertain the less friendly images: such as a meeting of chemists and alchemists — or even scientists and sages.
