Synthetic Optically Active Polymers as Catalysts for Asymmetric Syntheses

  • Chapter

Part of the book series: Charged and Reactive Polymers ((CHRP,volume 5))

Abstract

This is a review of the work done by different authors on catalysis by synthetic polymers, with particular emphasis upon optically active polymers used as catalysts for asymmetric syntheses. The first section is devoted to enzymes considered simply from the point of view of polymer chemistry, and discusses the importance of the macromolecular structure upon catalytic activity. In the next section, the general characteristics of catalysis by synthetic macromolecules are reviewed. This is primarily based upon the work carried out by the groups of Overberger and Morawetz. The work done with optically active polymers is then reviewed, emphasizing catalysis in both the heterogeneous and homogeneous phases. From observations based on this work, it is possible to define principles and characteristics of catalysis by synthetic macromolecules in general. This principles are compared with those of enzymes. A classification of synthetic catalytic polymers is also proposed. Finally, the possible advantages of macromolecular catalysts and possible ways to improve them, are discussed.
