Abstract
When we hear what atomic physicists have to relate about the properties and behaviour of atoms and atomic nuclei, and when we see what they are able to achieve by ingeniously exploiting atomic phenomena, we may well wonder how on earth they set to work exploring this strange world and manage to penetrate so deeply into it. In the following I shall attempt to answer this question, to lift the veil a little and initiate you into the methods that atomic physicists have developed and which they use in their work.
