Abstract
The unequal distribution of energy production and consumption among the major economic zones of the world is too well known to leave any doubt that availability of energy and the level of economic development are closely linked:
These figures have to be corrected by the contributions from “non-commercial” energy sources, in particular biomass, to which I shall return later. Is it conceivable that this inequality could be adjusted by utilization of solar energy which is distributed abundantly over a large part of our planet, especially over the inter-tropical zone in which most of the developing countries are located? To find an answer to this question is the prime objective of this Conference and I shall endeavour to make my own contribution with regard to the production of electromechanical energy.
