Solar energy holds out a large potential for all countries. It appears to be among the most promising energy options for developing countries, especially in the rural areas. This is due to:
  • particularly favourable conditions in terms of solar energy input (direct radiation, biomass, wind, etc.);

  • decentralized needs not involving the infrastructures of conventional energy networks;

  • consistency with some existing technological capabilities: several solar energy techniques such as passive heating and cooling or biomass have been extensively used for ages. They require only improvements.
