Abstract

Removal of excess body water is an important function of both the artificial kidney and peritoneal dialysis. Recently, solute removal in conjunction with ultrafiltration has been exploited as an alternative to diffusion as a means for cleansing uremic blood. This chapter deals with the practical and theoretical aspects of ultrafiltration and convective mass transfer across the artificial kidney and peritoneal dialysis membranes.
