Abstract
The evolution of medical technology during the past two decades has been accompanied by an increase in medical subspecialization, the emergence of an increased role of allied health professionals, higher medical costs and more complicated patient and program management problems. Although the technical aspects of patient care continue to occupy highest priority for the physician, many physicians have become involved with complicated management problems related to program planning, distribution of treatment resources and integration and surveillance of the services required to treat complex diseases.
