Abstract
Changes in the composition of American neighborhoods have occurred frequently during this century. Human ecologists, borrowing concepts from plant and animal ecology, have described these changes, utilizing the concepts of invasion and succession. These two concepts have been used to describe such diverse phenomena as the conversion of residential areas to business and industrial zones, and changes in the ethnic composition of particular areas.
