Abstract
During the past twenty years there have been many attempts made to develop computer simulations of urban systems. These attempts have ranged from quite modest to almost absurdly grand. Some have been rather successful while others were abysmal failures. To date, the efforts which have to some extent failed outnumber those which have succeeded. Yet all-in-all there has been substantial progress made, from a situation of great optimism and little knowledge to a more conservative position of guarded optimism with much more knowledge of urban phenomena. The purpose of this book is to review, with the advantage of hindsight, the progress which has been made. The intent of such a review is not only to record that which has been accomplished, but to also recall that which has failed. It is our hope that the information thus presented will help guide and enlighten future research efforts in the field.
