Abstract
Elodea canadensis Michx. was studied in the laboratory in order to see how it takes up phosphorus from the sediment and how it pumps it through the stem for later translocation to the surrounding water. 32P was injected into the sediment.
Two stations, one with dense Elodea vegetation and the other with solitary plants, were studied in the shallow Lake Tämnaren in order to follow the influence of Elodea growth on nutrients in the water and sediment. Total phosphorus and total nitrogen were analysed in the water, sediment and in different parts of the plant. All material was taken from the same sampling point. The total phosphorus content in the water was higher most of the year at the station with dense Elodea compared to the station with sparse vegetation.
