Changes in the Structure of Phytoplankton in Lake Balaton as a Result of Eutrophication

Shallow Lakes Contributions to their Limnology

Part of the book series: Developments in Hydrobiology ((DIHY,volume 3))

Abstract

In the shallow (mean depth 3.14 m) and elongate Lake Balaton, the horizontal distribution of phytoplankton biomass shows a gradual increase from east to west related to the changes of plant nutrients. In the more eutrophicated areas of the lake the values of diversity were higher than in the less eutrophicated ones, but good parallelisms between diversity and biomass were not usually detected. With the aid of cluster analysis three water quality areas were distinguishable in the lake on the basis of phytoplankton patterns but the position of their border lines changed with time.
