The flow of CO2-carbon from water to the air is characteristic for the self-purification of polluted rivers. Two kinds of in situ and laboratory apparatus have been built for the measure of the CO2 produced by benthic communities in small polluted brooks. We used at the same time the oxygen consumption method as the measure of respiration.
