Abstract
Bottom waters generally require oxygen to oxidixe reduction compounds in order to improve dissolved oxygen conditions. Hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) is commonly used for water treatment because of its oxidizing action and its breakdown decomposition into water and oxygen. It was investigated whether and to what extent this reagent was suitable to treat highly anoxic hypolimnion 455 kg of 35% H2O2 was applied to a small hypertrophic lake. The immediate effects were 82% decrease in sulfides and a 37.5% increase in dissolved oxygen. One month later, the situation was quite the same as before treatment, probably because of the high microbiological activity of the sediments.
