Abstract
The effect of soil on the composition of the water and on the growth of fish in intensive fish culture was studied. Fish were cultured in containers, with or without soil.
Accumulation of organic components (carbon, nitrogen and phosphorus) was lower in the presence of soil. In accordance, BOD of the water was higher in containers without soil.
Fish growth and viability was markedly improved in the presence of soil.
The effect of soils seems to be related to the adsorption of organic residues, algae and metabolites.
