Abstract
In eutrophic and hypertrophic waters muddy or earthy odours occasionally occur in water and fish. These odours are generally considered to be caused by blue-green algae or actinomycetes in the water. In the areas studied, the muddy odour in fish correlated with the amount of the blue-green alga, Oscillatoria agardhii, present in the phytoplankton. Earthy-smelling actinomycetes were enumerated and isolated from the water of the study areas, but no correlation was found between the number of actinomycetes and off-flavours in the fish. The number of odourous actinomycetes was related to the runoff from surrounding soils.
