Abstract
Braun-Blanquet & Tüxen (1952) described a number of grassland types in Ireland, the most widespread of which they labelled Centaureo-Cynosuretum (Br.-Bl. & Tx. 1952). No further grassland surveys were done until 1962 when the second author commenced a detailed grassland survey as a Ph. D. thesis. On the completion of this thesis in 1965, in which about 600 relevés had been incorporated, the phytosociology of all the common grassland types was reasonably clear. The work also showed that about 250 species - or one fifth of the total Irish flora - were to be found in the lowland grasslands.
