Abstract
Man at high altitude has most appropriately been described as eine habitatfremde Art or ecological anomaly (11). Human anatomy and physiology, which are products of arboreal ancestry and subsequent evolution in a forest environment, are in complete disharmony with the extreme conditions of semi-attenuated air, prevailing in the treeless world of high elevations. The high altitude is an unnatural and indeed a hostile environment for man. This has not, however, prevented man from venturing extensively into the highland ecosystems.
