Abstract

About 80 years have passed since the first investigations on the zooplankton of Neusiedlersee were published. Daday (1890, 1897) was one of the first scientists to describe its rotifers and crustaceans. In a paper published in 1926 Varga described the rotifer fauna of Neusiedlersee and mentions that when he started his investigations (16 August 1918) very little was known about the ‘Niedere Fauna des Wassers’. In 1929 Varga described a new, endemic rotifer species — Rhinops fertöensis (= synonym of Rhinoglena fertöensis). Later he presented some additional information about the rotifer plankton (Varga 1934), and in addition he discussed limnological aspects of Neusiedlersee and considered the influence of freezing to the bottom and of extreme wind situations on the different communities of the lake (Varga 1932, Varga & Mika 1937).
