The primary producers of the Phragmites belt, their energy utilization and water balance

Neusiedlersee: The Limnology of a Shallow Lake in Central Europe

Part of the book series: Monographiae Biologicae ((MOBI,volume 37))

Abstract

The value of ecological research depends partly on the knowledge of the phytocenology of the region studied. The prevalence of Phragmites communis in the reed belt is so marked that at first sight the whole stand seems to be monospecific. The great competitive powers of Ph. communis in shallow waters (see Chapter 21) allow only a temporary occurrence of other emergent macrophytes (chiefly Typha, Scirpus, Bulboschoenus) in deficiency zones (stubble pools, pools, lacunae), but never a stronger of permanent populations except in the shore region that periodically dries out. This evident paucity of species in extensive zones of the reed belt is attributable to three external factors:

  1. (a)

    the strongly anaerobic substrate of the root region (cellulose mud, Farahat & Nopp 1966, 1967);

  2. (b)

    the possibility of freezing down to the bottom and of pressure from drifting ice;

  3. (c)

    the strong fluctuations of the water level (Kopf 1964, 1966).
