Part of the book series: The Jerusalem Symposia on Quantum Chemistry and Biochemistry ((JSQC,volume 13))

Abstract

Carcinogenic aromatic amines form a group of compounds which can induce tumors in a variety of tissues in various species. In a number of situations certain arylamines may also pose a health hazard to humans. Several properties are responsible for the hazardous nature of this group of compounds, which may be summarized as follows:

  • (1) they can undergo a variety of metabolic activation reactions;

  • (2) the interaction with DNA leads to the formation of several reaction products, some of which may persist for prolonged periods of time. In particular these persistent products may lead to possible cumulative effects of biological significance;

  • (3) certain reaction products, particularly those of guanine, are potentially pro-mutagenic. Some typical examples of specific base modifications will be discussed.
